A place for each student
Classroom Seating Chart Generator
Set out the room, keep chosen seats fixed, and randomly place everyone else. Move or swap students until the plan is ready to use.
Your chart stays in this tab while you work. Reloading or leaving this page clears the room and seating plan. Saving a roster saves names only.

Student roster
Enter one name per line, from 1 to 100 students. Each name may use up to 60 characters. Repeated names stay separate.

Saved rosters require at least two names. A one-student chart works here without saving. Saved rosters are kept in this browser/device until removed; they are not a cloud backup.

Saved in this browser. There is no account or upload. Delete lists whenever you like.
Load roster applies saved names to this workspace. Replacing a seating plan asks for confirmation. Save roster saves the names in the editor, never the seating chart.

Rows and seats
Up to 10 rows and 10 seats per row. This is the tool’s V1 limit. Changes take effect when you apply them.
Unavailable positions are gaps, not spare seats. Move an occupant before blocking their seat.

Move, swap or fix
Choose a student, then a destination. Unfix both students before a swap. Other placements stay where they are.
Add at least one student to begin.
Row 1, seat 1: empty seat.
Fixed students stay in place. Remaining students and spare seats are assigned at random; an arrangement may repeat.

Print the current plan
The title stays in this workspace only. Print includes the current students, seat coordinates, empty seats and unavailable positions. Your browser controls printing and any Save as PDF option; printed or saved copies are under your control.
Generate a complete seating plan to enable printing.
WheelSays Classroom Seating Chart Generator: generate a complete seating plan before printing.
Start with the class and the room
Enter one student per line and choose Use roster, or load an existing saved roster. One student is enough to make a seating plan. Repeated names remain separate students: two entries called Alex appear as Alex, 1 of 2 and Alex, 2 of 2. Familiar initials can help the class recognise who belongs in each seat, but the tool does not change your labels.
Set the number of rows and seats per row, then apply the size. The front of the room is always at the top. Rows run from front to back; seats run left to right. The maximum of 10 by 10 positions is a limit of this version of the tool. Mark gaps or unusable positions as unavailable. An empty usable seat can receive a student; an unavailable position cannot. Generation shows the exact shortfall if the room has too few usable seats.
Keep particular placements, randomise the rest
Before generation, select a student and an empty destination, move them there, and choose Fix student. A fixed placement survives every randomisation. The remaining usable seat coordinates are shuffled using browser cryptography, then assigned to the unfixed students. This also randomises which spare seats stay empty. A repeated arrangement is possible; rerandomising does not promise a different result.
After generation, choose a student and a destination to move into an empty seat or swap with its occupant. Unfix any student involved first. Unrelated placements stay unchanged. You can fix more placements and rerandomise everyone still unfixed. When all students are fixed, unfix at least one to make rerandomisation available.
Review without relying on the map
Every position includes its row and seat coordinate, student or empty/unavailable state, and fixed status. Narrow screens show complete row lists. Wider screens show a spatial map only when each cell has enough room; you can choose the row list at any width. All adjustments use labelled controls and work without dragging or seeing the map.
Room expansion adds empty seats. A smaller room cannot remove an occupied seat: unfix and move that student into a surviving coordinate first. Applying a different roster asks for confirmation when placements exist, then clears the old seating and fixed choices while retaining room size and unavailable positions.
Keep roster saving separate from seating work
Names and seating positions are processed in your browser. The room, unavailable positions, fixed placements and manual corrections are temporary and clear when you reload or leave this page. Saving is optional and explicit. Save roster saves only the editor’s names using the existing browser-local list format, which requires 2–100 names. A one-student chart remains fully usable without saving.
Saved rosters remain in that browser and device until removed. They are not an account or cloud backup. A shared screen or browser profile can expose names to other people, so use only the identifying details you need. Read the privacy information for browser storage and site services.
For another lesson task, compare the classroom tools. Use Classroom Name Picker for one student’s turn, or Random Team Generator for groups.
Print the plan you have just checked
Add an optional class or period title and choose Print seating plan after generation. Printing uses the current arrangement, including your moves and swaps. Names, coordinates, empty seats, unavailable positions, counts and the front-of-room label are included. Setup controls and fixed/unfixed editing markers are left out.
The browser opens its own print controls and may offer Save as PDF. WheelSays does not generate a PDF file or know whether you printed, saved or cancelled. Preview the pages, check paper size and switch off browser headers and footers if you do not want them. Wide rooms print as row lists so names stay readable across multiple pages. Printed and browser-saved copies are under your control.
